Held annually in the month of February, the Joranda Sadhu Festival is one of the most significant gatherings of the Mahima Dharma religion in Odisha. It takes place at the main Mahima monastery in Joranda, near Dhenkanal, where thousands of sadhus (holy men) and devotees come together to witness and participate in unique spiritual rituals.
A major attraction of this festival is the worship of the Supreme Sadhus, who follow an extremely austere lifestyle, often wearing minimal coverings made from tree bark (Kumbhi tree). The sacred holy fire ritual, performed on an impressive 11-foot fire stand, symbolizes peace and harmony for the entire universe, drawing large numbers of visitors from across the state.
The Mahima tradition classifies sadhus into three spiritual stages:
1 – Gruha Tyagi (Primary)
These are beginners or disciples in the early stage of spiritual learning. They dedicate themselves fully to the religion under the guidance of Supreme Sadhus. They wear a saffron two-piece cotton cloth.
2 – Kaupuni Dhari (Secondary)
After around 12 years of dedication and discipline, selected individuals are promoted to this stage. They wear a very minimal saffron cloth, tied with an organic rope around the waist, covering only the lower body.
3 – Bakala Dhari (Supreme)
This is the highest stage achieved after long years of devotion and discipline. These sadhus leave cotton cloth entirely and wear only two pieces of bark from the Kumbhi tree. Many are seen with matted hair extending over 2 meters, symbolizing extreme renunciation. During the festival, only these Supreme Sadhus perform the main worship rituals at the monastery along with the sacred fire ceremony.
The entire ritual atmosphere, especially the fire worship for universal peace, creates a deeply spiritual experience for devotees and visitors.
The festival reflects the core values of Mahima Dharma, emphasizing simplicity, renunciation, equality, and universal peace. The gathering of sadhus and devotees creates a powerful spiritual environment filled with chanting, rituals, and sacred fire offerings.
Visitors can explore nearby attractions such as Kapilash Temple, located on a scenic hilltop, and the cultural town of Dhenkanal, known for its heritage and natural beauty.
