Journey with God – the grand chariot festival of Lord Jagannath, popularly known as Rath Yatra, is one of India’s greatest annual religious events. It is celebrated in Puri, Odisha, and also in many parts of India and abroad, but it is especially vibrant and colourful in Puri and tribal regions of Odisha.
At Puri, the grand festival begins from the sacred Jagannath Mandir (Jagannath Temple) and symbolically commemorates the journey of Lord Krishna from Gokul to Mathura. The images of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Goddess Subhadra are brought out of the temple and placed on massive wooden chariots known as “Raths”, which are then pulled by devotees along the Grand Road (Bada Danda) to the Gundicha Mandir, covering about 3.5 km.
The main chariot of Lord Jagannath stands around 14 meters high, with a base of over 10 square meters, and is mounted on 16 massive wheels, each more than 2 meters in diameter. Every year, hundreds of thousands of pilgrims and tourists gather to witness this grand spiritual procession.
Once the chariots reach Gundicha Mandir, the divine trinity stays there for a week-long “summer retreat” before returning to the main temple in a similar grand procession. Traditionally, the chariots are dismantled after the festival and used in temple kitchens, while new chariots are built every year using special wood, placing pressure on forest resources.
The Rath Yatra 2026 is marked by an overwhelming spiritual atmosphere where the entire city of Puri transforms into a living pilgrimage space. The grand movement of the massive wooden chariots through the Bada Danda, pulled by thousands of devotees chanting the name of Lord Jagannath, creates a powerful sense of devotion and unity. The scale of participation, with pilgrims arriving from across India and abroad, makes it one of the most significant religious gatherings in the world. The festival also extends beyond Puri, with similar yet culturally distinct celebrations in tribal regions of Odisha, where local traditions, music, and customs add a unique ethnographic dimension. Rooftop viewing points and photography setups further enhance the experience for visitors seeking a closer view of this spectacular event.
The festival reflects deep devotion and unity, blending urban, rural, and tribal traditions. In tribal regions, Rath Yatra includes folk dances, traditional music, and cultural processions, making it highly rich from a cultural and photography point of view. In some areas, newly married tribal couples also participate in traditional attire, adding a unique social dimension.
Nearby attractions include the sacred Jagannath Temple in Puri, the serene Puri Beach, the vast Chilika Lake, the architectural marvel of the Konark Sun Temple, and the scenic Chandrabhaga Beach. Extended travel routes also allow exploration of Odisha’s tribal heartlands such as Koraput and Rayagada, known for their landscapes and indigenous culture.
