At the Joranda monastery in Odisha, a unique and spiritually significant ritual unfolds every year, drawing thousands of devotees and ascetics. Known as Nabarna Bhog, this festival is closely associated with the Mahima sadhus (saints), who gather in large numbers to celebrate together in a deeply traditional manner.
The term “Nabarna Bhog” refers to the first crop of the season, which is ceremonially offered and then consumed. The ritual begins with the offering of the newly harvested grains to the God of Infinity (Alekh Brahma) following distinct and sacred customs of the Mahima tradition. After the offering, the senior sadhus partake in the meal with great reverence, and later, the devotees receive the blessed food (prasad).
